Message from the Dean

I would like to say welcome to those students who have just joined our faculty and extend my greetings to those who plan to join in the future and congratulate all of them for their wise decision. There are 11 departments (Business Administration, International Relations, Economics, Political Science, Computer Information Systems, Banking and Finance, International Business Administration, Marketing, Human Resources Management, Information Management) within the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences. According to our curriculum, the courses which are offered to students in their first and second years are compulsory basic courses preparing them for their field of specialty.
As of the third year, elective courses, which facilitates specialization in the related field of the department, are offered to sudents by each department. Within the period of taking only the compulsory courses, students will be able to get satisfactory information for evaluating whether or not they have chosen the right department. If they reach the conclusion that their choice is right they will continue their education in that department. Otherwise they can transfer their taken credits to another department of the faculty and continue their education there. Thus having 11 different department at our faculty should be considered as an exceptional privilige for our students. Because of this particularity, our faculty is able to offer a wide range of employment opportunities to our students. At the same time, because the language of instruction is English, our graduates have a beter chance of finding employment in international as well as national firms and other organizations. (Please view the web pages of the departments for more information about job opportunities.)
The basic philosophy underlying our understandig of education is to establish an effective communication and insure close cooperation with the students so that they will be able to bring their problems and questions to the attentions of intructors, advisors and faculty administration. We are in the opinion that education is not a one way street (process) where instructors lecture and students listen carefully without any reaction. We believe in the fact that, education is an active interaction between students and faculty. In this context,it has utmost importance for us that students should be able to establish effective communication with the instructors, advisors and related administrators, either during lectures or outside lecture hours. In the beginning of each term, office hours are determined and announced by each faculty member, and they make themselves available in their offices, for the purpose of communicating with the students about academic and social matters outside the lecture hours.
In general, when the instructors and students come together within a university, one side play the role of a “student” the other role of a “teacher”, and they display behaviors in line with these societal roles, which are determined by the social rules. Thus, communication between the students and faculty is actualized in a limited form within the confines of the socially learned roles. But underneath the social identities of “teacher” and “student” there are unique personalities with specific characteristics. For the purpose of letting them recognize their human personalities better, in cooperation with the students, our faculty organizes social events where faculty members and students come together. Such dinners are held outside the university perimeters so as to let the students and faculty members interact freely as friends. Such banquets, touristic tours and picnics organized by faculty members contributes to the development of social relations between the academics and students, and thus eases and increases the effectiveness of communication.
Our faculty is hosting 300 foreign students coming from 13 different nations. This specific characteristic of the faculty provides a chance to our students to get acquainted with and merge with different cultures, and thus increases the chances of our graduate to find employment in international arena. The nature and the quality of education, unique culture of Cyprus, tranquil environment and climate, facilities povided to the students in the NEU Campus, social, cultural and academic activites of the student clubs, spring festivals held every year. substantially contrıbutes to the development of our students as free and independent individuals.
Its my hope that all of our students will try to get the best out of such privileges offered by our university, and believe that they will not hesitate to bring all of the problems they face regarding their social and academic lives to the attention of their advisors, intsructors and related administrators. I wish you all the best for an exciting and rewarding, challenging and stimulating four years on this campus, which will be the start of what I hope will be a lifelong experience as members of the Near East family.

Dean of Faculty of Economics & Administrative Sciences
